After a long and hard-fought battle, the HarperCollins Union (UAW 2110) has finally reached a tentative agreement with management. After almost 100 days on the picket line, employees are expected to return to work on February 21.
According to the Associated Press, the deal includes an increase in annual starting pay to $47,500 upon ratification, and a rise to $50,000 by the beginning of 2025. In addition, full-time union members will receive a lump sum payment of $1,500.
Although this is a step in the right direction, it still doesn’t make up for the fact that many entry-level publishing employees are not being paid a living wage. It’s time for the publishing industry to address the ongoing imbalance in favor of the white and the rich by paying fair wages to all employees.
Congratulations to the HarperCollins Union for their hard work and dedication in securing this deal!
